Researching music and sound

When we used Creative Commons to find copy-right free music, we went onto websites such as Soundcloud and Jamendo to find music suitable for our teen film.

We found Soundcloud very easy to use as it gave us loads of possible music choices which were free to download, and all we had to do was type in a key word into the search engine.

Some possible music choices we found from Soundcloud were: Keith Kenniff - Carry On, Hyde - Free Instruments, Summer Indie Rock and  Mint Julep - Tame. These were both indie style music and had a good feel to accompany the beginning of our opening as it created a calm school atmosphere.

Overall we felt that Sound Cloud was much easier to use rather than Jamendo as it had more music choices which were free to download, it also had an easily assessible layout which we found appealing. These four choices of music are ones we definitely think we can use in our teen film.

Comparison of our shot by shot remake of the breakfast club and the original

Our version of the Breakfast club was of course not as professional or as fast paced as the original. We could not, of course, drive a real car or leave the college to get a better view of the college as they were able to in their version. As you can see in the pictures below  we had to come up with a creative way of making it look like we were driving a car.  

Our budget was much less and we had a much smaller cast and crew for our shot by shot remake. We had to film and act out the scenes for ourselves which lead to a much less extensive shot type as we only have three people to act and shoot the opening.

Holiday task- analysis of a teen film

KIDULTHOOD

Kidulthood is a 2006 British drama film about several teenagers in inner West London. It was written by Noel Clarke who also starred in it as the local 'bad man'. It is set in 2002 following the life of two 15 year olds: Trevor, aka "Trife" (Aml Ameen) and Alisa (Red Madrell), who get caught up in the teenage lifestyle of love, sex, drugs and partying. There was also the school bully Sam (Noel Clarke) is portrated as the antagonist in the film, who has a vendetta against Trife and his best friends.

Conventions

• It is no suprise that the target audience of this film is too teenagers as it contains all the correct content to shock, wow and amazing young people.
• From the word go, the film contained typical conventions you'd see in a teen film, such as, gangs e.g. led by Sam (Noel Clarke), sex e.g. Alisa becomes pregnant with Trife's baby, and drugs e.g. Alisa and her best friend experiment.
• The genre of this film is mainly drama and I do believe it appeals to both girls and boys, as it has the violence and gang culture that would intrest boys and the targedy element of Trife dying (SPOILER ALERT) and his relationship with Alisa that would appeal to girls.





Filming the Breakfast Club Shot by Shot by Shot Remake

While filming our Shot By Shot Remake We walked around college and found things as close to what was shown in the opening scene as possible. We took man pictures for our blog of us filming the different parts of he college.

Filming the car scenes was hard as we couldn't use a real car.

The shoot went quite well. We filmed most of the scenes that were in the opening scene. Some of the things wee were not allowed to film as we could not leave the college. one thing that went wrong, however is that we forgot to put in the speakers for our talking scene. We had to re-film these scenes.

Influences For Our Teen Movie - Gore/Horror

For our teen movie we have chosen the sub-genre of horror. We are looking at other Gore type movies to give us inspiration for our movie.

A movie that we are looking at closely is Carrie as it is a very similar genre as what we are looking at.

We are taking interest in the scene in the movie where Carrie has pigs blood poured onto her at prom.

We will also look at Texas Chainsaw massacre.


Overview

These movies have influenced to go in the direction of gore, and psychological element to spook the audience.

Storylines and plot

I analysed the opening scene from the film 'Romeo and Juilet'

Storyline

• There has been the ongoing fued between two families: the Montagues and the Capulets. In this clip there are two gangs from the rival families having a dual at a gas station; one is represented in dark clothing and the other in bright. The Capulets are shown as the superior, stronger group.
• A few binary oppositions include: Montague and Capulets, good and bad, and dark and light.

Mise-en-scene binary oppositions

• The Capulets wore mainly darker clothing, where the Montagues were brighter floral clothing.
• The Montagues body language and characterisation was quite nervous, scared and clumsy. Whereas the Capulets were strong, self-assured and demostrated power in their upright stance.
• The Montagues drove flashy modern cars, but the Capulets drove classic cars.
• The Capulets hair and make up was slicked back and dark, but the Montagues were blondish, with pale spotty skin.

Camera binary oppositions





 These are a couple of the camera binary oppositions used in the start of the film, when introducing the main characters in their families.

Editing binary oppositions

• The main editing opposition is that there are quick editing cuts and slow fade aways.

Sound binary opposition

• There is upbeat and rap music in contrast to the slow paced instrumental.
• There is the obvious loud and quiet contrast in sound.
• The diagetic sound in contrast to the sound effects of the gun.

Comparison between original Breakfast Club and Our Remake

Although our one is not as professional as the original we tried to make it as similar as possible by using the same shot types and the same scenes etc. We did not have a big budget, actually we had no budget at all and use what we had in arsenal. We also had miss out a couple of the shots as they were not possible to create, therefore that meant we had to skip them all together. The orginal "Breakfast Club" had famous actors and actresses such Emilo Estevez (Charlie Sheen's Brother) and Molly Ringwald who was famous during the eighties.
